The pandemic was a turning point for many, and for me, it became a necessary moment of reflection—one driven by the urgent need to make a living. My career had virtually come to a grinding halt. Though I’d graduated from the Johannesburg School for Art, Music, Ballet and Drama—a foundation I still deeply value—I hadn’t truly picked up a paintbrush in years. That changed when I decided to return to painting. It began with a portrait commission from a friend, which opened the door to many more. From there, things just took off.

As someone who re-entered the art world later in life, every piece has felt like a step deeper into self-discovery of what is possible. My work has evolved dramatically…..looking back at my paintings from five years ago compared to now, the difference is astonishing and exciting. I’m still developing my personal style and refining my techniques and I  have a clear vision of where I hope to take my work. I also understand that reaching that destination will require dedication, resilience, and a healthy dose of courage.

Portrait painting holds a special place in my heart—there’s nothing quite like seeing a client connect with a piece. Wildlife art, too, is a close contender. Ultimately, my aim is to create pieces that resonate with people, that evoke feeling, that speak to something within. Not every attempt hits the mark, but when everything aligns, the satisfaction is unparalleled and could not be more rewarding. Regardless of the commission brief, I truly believe that before painting specifically for collectors or prospective clients, you need to create for yourself first—and let everything else flow from there
